Our random Italian vocabulary

Although many local businesses speaks some English (or use a translation app), here are some regular phrases and sentences that will help you when around Modica and Sicily.

Note: Italians but the emphasis on the last syllable of a word – the Sicilians (who invented the language) put the accent on the first syllable e.g.
4 chocolate ice-creams please -> quattro gelati cioccolato per favore. (pr: kwa-tro gel-a-ti chi-o-co-la-toh pair favori)
The emphasis, in Italian, is on the “chi-o-co-LA-to” in cioccolato; in Sicilain the emphasis will be on the “chi-O-co-la-to”

Hints on pronouncing

Italian, like French, Spanish, German, etc., have different sounds for letters next to each0ther.  A perfect example is the word focaccia which is pronounced foh-cah-chi-ah.  The single “c” (focaccia), is a hard sound as in cat.  The double “c” focaccia, is the sound “ch” as in chair.

The table below includes some general phrases – I have tried to put some phonetic pronunciation in to get the right sound – you will also benefit from listening to RAI TWO

The phonetics are based on English pronunciation but you will notice I put an “h” at the end of some words so, for example, a word with “goh” in is pronounced “gohh” not “go”.
